romoting your business online, whether social media, blogs,
videos, self-help guides, etc., can be beneficial to your busi-
ness and most importantly to your bottom line. You do not
need to enter into a costly advertising campaign to be
included into the digital world. You can start out with some-
thing as simple as a photo posted online of a project
you or your team worked on that day; it can quickly
become a conversation starter.
Why post anything online?
Maybe you have a bricks and mortar store and just figure that talking to your customers in the store is the best way to communicate.
While an in-person meeting is often the best way to close a sale, it may
not be the best way to reach your audience. There are many barriers that
may keep you from seeing customers in your store, such as geography,
hours, parking, schedules, wait time, etc. Some business owners think
just because their business has a website their customers can interact
with them 24x7. While a website is a great way for an existing or new
customer to learn about your business, customers need to have a reason
to look for your website or online presence.
Many dealers rely on traditional referrals. Your company works on a
boat at a marina and a boat owner a few slips down sees your high-quality work and asks your customer for your phone number. Keep up the

Pgood work and you may not ever need to leave that marina. But how do you get new referrals outside your existing market/marina/yacht club etc.? A picture is worth more than a thousand words
You can easily participate in social media and create a basic online
presence for no cost besides your time. A simple picture of a project—
even better, something humorous or eye catching—can reap benefits
for your business.
Instagram is a photo and video sharing service owned by Facebook.
Membership is free. This is the most popular graphic-driven social
media platform. As of June 2018, the social network reported more
than 1 billion monthly active users worldwide and the social media network’s daily active users stood at 500 million. With over 110 million
active Instagram users in the United States, America is the photo sharing app’s leading market based on audience size.
What can you do with Instagram? Create a free account, take a picture, prepare a caption and upload it to your account. At a minimum,
that’s all you have to do. Sure, you can be more interactive within the
application–that just solidifies your online presence.

Only a few issues ago we reviewed the topic of digital advertising and its variations that are available to
help you grow your business (MEJ May/June p. 46). While we are a technology-heavy industry, there are
still those who do not see the value or do not have the time to pursue getting their business online and
interactive. In this issue, we look at a few ways you can easily get into the game that are simple yet effective. Still not convinced about the benefits the digital world offers, be sure to read the Digital Transformation story on p. 36.
