Tech Update (Continued from page 10)
network. This simplifies installation for adding or subtracting a device from the network. It also allows for a significant reduction in the number of wires on a boat, thereby substantially reducing costs and weight. NMEA 2000®
uses a common “backbone” cable to provide communication on the network. With a proper choice of cables, the
backbone can be as long as 200 meters while maintaining a data rate that is over 50 times as fast as NMEA 0183.
A single NMEA 2000® cable replaces wiring for up to 50 NMEA 0183 interconnections.
For electronics on the NMEA 2000® network to operate properly, only cables and connectors that are approved
by NMEA must be used—there is no middle ground. Only approved cables and connectors can assure that devices
now and in the future will be plug and play. You can find approved cables and connectors at:

At the same time, NMEA also certifies each NMEA 2000® product. Products must meet strict certification require-
ments that assure products comply with the standards and that those products will behave on the network properly
and predictably. Only products that have been certified by NMEA can use the NMEA 2000® logo—look for it!
In order for various manufacturers to build products for an open network, the marine electronics industry cre-
ated a common set of behavior characteristics for each product. They are actually software messages that provide a
mechanism of commonality among equipment. The characteristics provide the foundation that allows products to
communicate with each other and makes sure everything works together on the network.
For products to operate properly on the NMEA 2000® network, however, they must be NMEA 2000®-Certified.
This is very important.
Some manufacturers market their products as “NMEA 2000® compatible” or “NMEA 2000® compliant” or that
they “work with NMEA 2000®.” These are not certified products. They have not been tested and probably won’t
work on a NMEA 2000® network; they may even disrupt the network.
To be sure products meet the NMEA 2000® standard and will work with other NMEA 2000® products, make sure
when buying your NMEA 2000® products that they have been certified by NMEA. As many products are being devel-
oped and certified, check the NMEA website on a regular basis for updates on NMEA 2000®-Certified products:
NMEA recommends using a dealer who has been trained by NMEA and is familiar with installing NMEA 2000®
networks. NMEA has trained more than 280 dealers around the country and continues to offer training to other deal-
ers. Check the NMEA website for an updated list of NMEA 2000®-trained dealers:
As of June, there are more than 400 NMEA 2000®-Certified products. The NMEA 2000® Standards Committee,
comprised of global manufacturers, continues its work as new technologies and products emerge. Many companies
around the world are developing products to the NMEA 2000® Standard. Some manufacturers, in order to differen-
tiate themselves in the marketplace, have “network” names for their networks under their own brands. While these
are NMEA 2000® products, they may not be using approved NMEA 2000® cables and connectors.
